The Forensic Sky-Watch: A Beginner’s Guide to Reading NOAA Space Weather

The Sun emits a constant stream of charged particles (Solar Wind) and magnetic energy. Here is exactly how to read the data from the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).

1. The Kp-Index (The "Intensity" Meter)

Think of the Kp-Index as the "volume knob" for the Earth's magnetic field. It measures how much the magnetic field is "wobbling" due to solar activity.

• Where to look: The "Estimated Kp Index" bar chart on the SWPC Dashboard.

• How to read it:
